i run win xp home, and i installed a usb 2.0 pci card.
since installation my computer keeps frrezing, and
sometimes locking up so i have to restart. i removed the
usb 2 port and it runs fine. why, and what can i do to
keep it from happening when i re-install the usb 2 port?

Hi Steve,

Do you have SP2 installed? Go to device manager and see if there are any
yellow question marks there. It is possible that you need a driver
installed.

What brand card is it? Do you have SP1 installed? Details
of your system? Have you tried deleting all USB ports and
hubs with device manager (with the card installed) and
rebooting so the correct drivers will be installed and no
conflicts with old drivers.

How many PCI cards are installed and do you have open slots?

i have all the updates that are currently available.
pentium III 933 mhz 128 meg ram, win xp home. the drivers
are installed correctly. they are the ones that win xp
provides. the instructions that came with the pci card
said i would have to uninstall the win xp drivers and
install the manufacturers drivers. does that really need
to be done? it works fine with the win xp drivers, it
just locks up a lot. would using the manufacturers driver
fix that?

I meant to ask if you have SP1 installed.

Hi again Steve,

I would suggest trying the drivers that came with your card, provided they
are for XP. The worst that would happen is, you would have to go back to the
old drivers. Sometimes, XP's drivers are not the best choice. I installed a
USB2 card in my other machine. I used the drivers that came with it and had
no problem.

Gee, the mfg'r said to use their drivers and you think that
would be a lot of trouble, it works fine except it crashes
all the time.

You also are short on RAM for XP, it could be a hard drive
issue with the virtual memory read/writes over-taxing the
CPU. What devices do you have plugged into the USB?
