USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Problem

I'm having problem with my Bytecc external enclosure, with its USB 2.0 connection. Its model number is 350U2F and it is housing a Western Digital hard drive. The external drive is working properly in Windows XP using its Firewire connection. I formatted the drive, created a partition, and tested it by copying files from and to the drive. With USB 2 connection, the drive is working properly when it is connected for the first time ( I can copy files from it). And I have tested this behaviour with two computers with Windows XP. The next time it is connected, Windows XP complains with Unknown Device error message (this is the same with all three windows xp machines). I have tried removing the mass-storage driver from device manager and then use the 'scan for new hardware' option, but it gave the same error msg. The USB connection on the hardware itself seems to be working ok, because I have tried it also on a Win2k computer, and it is working ok. With the Win2k machine, there is no problem connecting it for a second time unlike with the winxp computers

I suspect that there is a problem with USB support in WinXP. I have tried to edit the registry keys at HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB .. but I can't edit the entry for the external hd since it is apprently in use by the OS

Is there anyway I can fix this problem? any suggestions

Thank

No, it uses an external power supply. And I forgot to mention in my last post, the windows xp machines are patched with sp-1.

My problem is similar here if anyone has figured this one
out. External USB 2.0 drive with its own power is "not
recognized" most of the time. What's up?

Have you done this...right click on My Computer icon, select 'manage'.then
go in to see if the drive is recognized in there. If it is not you can
'activate' it in the Computer Management portion of the window.. Worth a
try.

Is the HDD even spinning up. A lot of the enclosures are
just plain junk.

Hi Frank,

Yes, the HDD is spinning up. It does work about 50% of
the time. And it works 0% of the time if the computer
goes into standby mode.

I think it may have something to do with a file called
hpusbfd.sys which is the driver file that the enclosure
drive points to when I look at the device manager. Its
odd because its not an HP enclosure or drive. I tried
renaming this file and restarting, but then none of my
usb devices were recognized.

I'm thinking it may have something to do with my HP 6200C
scanner, although the scanner works file and also does
NOT use the hpusbfd.sys file as a driver.

I've tried two different USB PCI cards -- both the ALi
and NEC chipsets. Currently, I have the NEC chipset card
installed, but same problem.

Ideas?

Thanks,
Pete

Not even those on the PCI card?

My guess is that the wrong drivers are loading
occasionally....sometimes 1.1, sometimes 2.0.

Have a nice week...
