I was updating a laptop running Win 2000 SP1 to SP4 but now when I try to
restart the laptop I receive the following error message, A Disk error
occurred.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this as I am really stuck and need to get it
back up and running as soon as possible. I don't even have the orginal win
2000 disks to try and boot from them.

You may have a hardware problem. Download and run the
disk diagnostic program that your disk manufacturer makes
available on his web site, or take the machine to your
computer dealer.

UNfortunately the laptop does not have a floppy disk drive to run diagnostic
tools.

Will they still run from the Cd drive?

Since you have access to a computer, try googling "windows 2000 a disk error occurred",
as a starting point. Also, how far do you get in the bootup process before the error
message. Try hitting F8 and see if you get a screen with various bootup choices. Also,
if you know the manufacturer of your hard drive, go to their web site and download disk
testing utilities. Also, can you get into your Bios setup right at the beginning of the
bootup, you might find some information abou the hard drive(size, manufacturer). Also
google "windows 2000 startup disk", that'll take you to alot of information and maybe
even a downloadable startup file. Go to the Microsoft Knowledge Base and search for
this problem. Try googling "free disk diagnostics" and see if you can find some
downloadable files that will work off a floppy drive.

Sorry, it's very late and I haven't had this kind of problem(knock on wood) for long
enough that I've forgotten the drill. But if you have access to a computer you can dig
for information instead of waiting for an answer on the newsgroup. Also supply as much
information about the problem as possible...ie, does the computer beep(beep codes)
before the error message, is the hard drive light blinking, any unusual noises, any
other words on the screen when the error message shows.

Good luck,

John

If you have a CD burner then you can burn yourself a boot CD,
based on the diagnostic disk that you download. You must, of
course, have another PC with a burner and a floppy disk drive.

Alternatively you can pull out the disk and connect it to some
other PC by using a $5.000 adapter. Be very careful with this
adapter: If you connect it back to front then you will fry the
disk.

I also recommend that you repost your question in a hardware
newsgroup. Since Win2000 never even gets close to starting,
your query is totally unrelated to Win2000. You would get
precisely the same error message with DOS!
