UPS options for Vista

M

Michael Taylor

I have an uninteruptible power supply (APC Smart UPS 1000) with a serial
connection that I've used with a Windows XP Pro based PC.

Under XP I can configure its use under the Power Options in control panel,
but under Vista it isn't there anymore.

I've searched Vistas help information but couldn't find anything about it.
Has it been removed?

Maybe i'll get to get something from APC to support it under Vista.

Thanks for any advice.

Vista has no serial device support. Try a serial to USB patch cable. Vista
might see it then.

Probably cheaper to buy a new USB connecte APS, and get a new battery
<g> APCC have a tradeup plan I understand.

Yeah but the older SmartUPS a longer run time than the new smaller USB
only units. I prefer the Smart UPS 1000 and 1400 to those new units
and willing do battery replacements if the unit is otherwise solid --
even if it means I don't get the 'smart part' due Microsoft dropping
support for serial ports. Then again, I've seen a bunch of new
motherboards lacking both serial and parallel ports -- makes me feel
downright old.

Look at the XS1500 bundle at CompUsa $299, This is a xs1500 with the
extra battery pak. Most Internet prices for the 2 items are in the
upper $300 range. On a Celeron based POS , Powerchute indicates over
230 Minutes estimate.

Vista does not support Powerchute with its better runtime control.
APC just got acquired by a EU firm. We will see if there are "Vista"
upgrades.

Heck. They are leaving off PS/2 ports, Floppy drives.

Ah yes, Dell systems these days. Next to go will be analog VGA --
already beginning to drop off of some video adapters.
BTY Vista Ultimate RC2 5744 x86 device manager shows COM1 and COM2
that are on my motherboard.

Right - the problem is that the serial interface doesn't accept
'control' from the serial cable UPS (at least that's my understanding).

Right -- that is what I thought -- didn't realize that APC had been
acquired. Then again with our ongoing trade deficit, I wonder when the
Washington monument is purchased...

I don't feel old -- even if I am an antique. Life is good!

Thanks for everyones replies.

I checked the APC wesbite this morning. It says a version of Powerchute
compatible with Vista will be available sometime in Q1.

Native VISTA driver was MAJOR HEADACHE for me. I have APC UPS 750 that
previously used Power chute personal edition. I uninstalled it before
upgading- and Vista installed its native APC driver for it. Well- long story
short after a couple hours of idling- I came back to a CRASHED VISTA. Looking
in event reports- it showed a 'power event' occured. I tried a bunch of other
stuff before unplugging the USB cable to it- and that was it - no more
crashes and event manager is void of errors. I sure hope APC got it
together on their VISTA offering.

Understood -- I've seen similar issues in other operating systems --
and not just with APC
