upgrading

Hi all,
Been running win98 SE for a while, I tried to upgrade to
XP home edition with the upgrade cd. Upon installation a
message came up advising me that it can not continue
installation process as I'm running two operating systems,
which I'm not. Exit installation process and continued
using win 98. Rebooted pc and now I system is freezing up,
running very slow. Is there anything I did wrong?
I rather not to do a full rebuild, is there another way to
upgrade or to bypass this this issue on upgrading to XP?
Your help is much appreciated.
Regards
Sam

Apparently you acquired an "OEM Version" of Windows XP.
OEM versions cannot upgrade an existing Windows installation.
Only "Retail Versions" can upgrade. Either purchase a Retail Version
of Windows XP or reformat your drive to install the OEM version "clean".
