I think it's time to break away W2K. I see upgrades available on Amazon and
elsewhere to SP2. Is SP2 really the latest? I'm sure this machine has the
latest, but don't see a way to determine that.

Windows XP with SP3 is the latest version of XP. You will need Windows XP
Pro to upgrade from Windows 2000.

SP3 is the latest. I've heard (or at least thought I did) that SP3 will
install Windows Media Player 11, and I don't want that version, so I'm still
on SP2.

Well, here's one with SP3

Why the "System Builders". Is this an upgrade?

From wikipedia:
It is succeeded by Windows Vista, which was released to volume license
customers on 8 November 2006, and worldwide to the general public on 30
January 2007. Direct OEM and retail sales of Windows XP ceased on 30 June
2008, although it is still possible to obtain Windows XP from System
Builders[4] (smaller OEMs who sell assembled computers) until 31 July 2009
or by purchasing Windows Vista Ultimate or Business and then downgrading to
Windows XP.

I'm guessing there's no support from MS for the System Builder version. If
MS has "let go" of XP, is it possible to upgrade from an already owned
package, thereby having two machines with the same license?
