well i want to upgrade to XP prof. from ME but before i do
that, it said i need to obtain a compatible update for the
the WAN miniport (ATW). It was under the heading of
Network Adapters, and i have no idea how to go about
fixing this problem. Please help! ~thanks a ton!

I personally have heard nothing but horror stories about
trying to upgrade Windows ME. If it's not one thing then
it's another. I would recommend backing up all your data
and then format the drive and do a clean install of
Windows XP Pro.

I think it's telling you that you will have to get an updated driver for
your network card. Find out what kind of card you have, go to the
manufactuere's web site for that card, and download it. Or, possibly,
just replace the card, since network cards are only $5 to $20 anyway.

Don't tell my machine, which was upgraded from a very shaky ME and has
been running fine for three years now

WAN miniport means the driver for the Ethernet port (or likely separate
card on an ME machine. Go to the maker's site and look for a driver for
it for XP, then go ahead with the install, saying carry on if it
complains about drivers, and then use the new driver to update once XP
is installed
