Hello.

I am attempting to upgrade to Windows XP Pro from Home edition. The error
it tells me is that the version of windows I'm trying to install
(professional) is older than the currently installed version.

I've recently installed SP2 for my home edition and was wondering what could
be causing this. Any suggestions.

Unless SP2 is integrated into XP Pro, then one cannot
upgrade an existing XP Home w/SP2 installation using
a non-SP2 version of XP Pro. What you need to do is
create a SP2 "slipstreamed" version of XP Pro, then use
the new CD to upgrade over XP Home w/SP2.

You have two options:

1. Uninstall SP2 from XP Home, then upgrade to XP Pro.

or

2. Create a SP2 slipstreamed version of XP Pro (preferred)
and use the new XP Pro w/SP2 to upgrade.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

Hi,

You need to uninstall the service packs before doing the upgrade.

Hi,

I have recently purchased a notebook that comes with WinXP SP2 Home Edition
pre-installed. I would like to upgrade it to WinXP Prof SP2. I have checked
thru' and found my copy of the WinXP Home Edition to be eligible for this
upgrade. Will this have any problems with the Home Edition license after the
upgrade? Could I download the Prof SP2 files from the Microsoft download
center?

Thks

Some clarification regarding Ricks response above - if you have XP Home SP2
installed and you try to upgrade to XP Pro with a XP Pro CD that does not
include SP2 you receive the version message - XP Home SP2 is considered an
"upgrade" over XP Pro without SP2 (Confused?)

Mike - in your case to upgrade XP Home you should use an updated XP Pro CD,
one that includes SP2. By "license" if you are referring to activation -
yes activation will be required.

You can not officially download the Pro SP2 files. You need to purchase the
retail Upgrade kit.

The only problems I foresee is:

1) The Pro Upgrade CD may not have the latest Service Pack 2 installed (old
stock in store.) You can fix this by Slipstreaming the Network install
version of SP2 into a newer install CD.

2) The anti-virus may block, or cause problems. Un-install the anti-virus
and since you have no anti-virus software protecting the laptop, disconnect
cables you need to connect to the Internet, during the Upgrade. Once the
Upgrade completes, re-install the anti-virus and re-connect to the Internet.
