I have XP home edition on my computer, can I upgrade the hardware without
affecting the XP licence?

I have been told that if XP thinks its on another computer that is not
licenced it wont work properly, so how do I start upgrading my computer
without getting licence problems, eventually I may even change the
motherboard.

Will this be a problem?

If Windows XP is retail, worst case is a 5 minute call to Microsoft.

If Windows XP is OEM, you can normally change all hardware except the
motherboard unless motherboard is from the same manufacturer as
original.
Contact the OEM for details.
