Hi, Jay.
I've also heard horror stories about the boogeyman, but I've never seen a
real one. ;^}
I've been using WinXP for 2 years now and have seen fewer BSODs and error
messages than with ANY prior version of Windows, and I've been using Windows
since version 1 (about 1983).
The actual "upgrade" process sometimes does a less-than-perfect job of
updating hardware device drivers and "migrating" applications from the old
MS-DOS-based Win9x/ME to the NT-based Win2K/XP, because NT handles hardware
so much differently from MS-DOS. If you read thousands of messages in these
newsgroups (as I have), you will come to the distinct opinion that a "clean
install" is much better than an upgrade. Sure, it takes an hour or two
longer, but it almost surely will save you days or weeks of frustration
further down the road. But I've never heard anything about a 6-month
honeymoon.
In short, if you clean install, a week from now you will have forgotten the
extra couple of hours you spent. If you "upgrade", a month from now you'll
still be dealing with the frustrations. And all those years of accumulated
garbage that you've been meaning to clean out anyhow will still be clogging
up your hard drive.
