Upgrading from Home to XP

I recently installed SP2 to my XP Home. When I tried to upgrade from XP Home
to XP Pro, it tells me "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows
on your computer is newer than the version on the CD." It won't even let me
"continue".

Is this a SP2 glitch? or is there something else I do not know to do? If I
boot from the XP Pro disk and install, will it wipe out my program
installations (I do understand it will change Windows-specific settings)?

Unless SP2 is integrated into XP Pro, then one cannot
upgrade an existing XP Home w/SP2 installation using
a non-SP2 version of XP Pro. What you need to do is
create a SP2 "slipstreamed" version of XP Pro, then use
the new CD to upgrade over XP Home w/SP2.

You have two options:

1. Uninstall SP2 from XP Home, then upgrade to XP Pro.

or

2. Create a SP2 slipstreamed version of XP Pro (preferred)
and use the new XP Pro w/SP2 to upgrade.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

You need to do a "Slipstream:" on your XP Professional disk. This
essentially updates the disk to SP2, updating system core modules.

Google for Slipstream Sp2 - There are a number of excellent websites
that provide step-by-step instructions. It does require a CD-Burner &
3rd party CD recording program (Nero, EasyCD,...)

An excellent slipstreamer and free too is "Autostreamer" - use it in
conjunction with Nero or similar to burn your CD

Not really; it arises from trying to replace files (many being in common
between Home and Pro) with older ones. There are two possibilities.
One is to make a slipstreamed CD of Pro to use, combining SP2 into the
content of the one you have. See a method at Slipstreaming SP2:
http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=7262 - there are others you will
see suggested around here.

The other is to Uninstall SP2 from your Home system (normally at
Add/remove programs, you may have to check 'show updates' to see it).
Then when that is back to previous state, do the Pro upgrade.

Third of course is to ask yourself if you *need* Pro anyway. Apart from
extras mainly aimed at corporate net use, like joining a domain, the
two are identical, and you should not upgrade for the hell of it
