I recently had some problems with my second computer so reformatted the hard
drive and then re-installed DOS 6.2, followed by windows 3.1 and windows 95.
I still have the upgrade CDs for windows 98 and XP but I do not have the
cover for the 98 CD so do not have the product key. The windows XP Cd cannot
upgrade directly from windows 95. What can I do

Put in the Windows XP CD. Boot from it or the six-floppy disk method
(depending on wha this computer you are using is capable of.) Follow
through the installation (do a clean install - delete and create partitions,
etc) until it asks you for qualifying media. When it does - follow its
directions and insert your Windows 9x (95 or 98) installation media (CD) and
let it identify it - then continue with your clean install.

Done.

You should not need your win98 product key for installing XP even if
using the win98 cd for the upgrade verification. Just inserting the CD
for the upgrade check should be all you need to do.

There was no need to start with MS-DOS, if you goal is to install
WinXP. Nor is there any need to install Win98.

It's quite possible to perform a clean installation using the WinXP
Upgrade CD, provided you have the true installation CD for the earlier OS.

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. The Upgrade CD checks to see if a qualifying OS
is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks you to insert the
installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately, an OEM
"Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must have a
true installation CD, complete with the "\Win98" folder and *.cab
files, or the "\i386" folder of WinNT/2K.

So make the six diskettes and boot from those with your Windows XP CD in the

See the link I have given twice in this thread?

This one:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Go there..
Type it in your browser on a machine where you have a floppy
diskette drive and the ability to use it - and also six available
known-good and formatted to be sure floppy diskettes.

Once you get there and read about the diskettes you should
notice this part:

Thank you for the time you spent helping me with the problem, I had never heard of these bootable discs before. Fortunately I still have more than 6 floppy discs that I have not thrown away.
