Upgraded modem driver, now COM port disappeared

I downloaded a new driver for my Lucent WinModem after
being prompted to by WinUpdate.
Now my COM3 port has disappeared, and with it my internet
connection!
How can I add the COM3 port back so that I can use the
modem?
(Non-techie advice please, preferably in easy steps)

go to my computer then click on network connections create
a new connection and then follow listed steps when it
searches for the modem specify com3
