Upgraded from ME to XP pro - very very slow boot now

I recentley updated my desktop from Windows ME to Windows
XP pro. Now when I turn the computer on the screen seems
to come up fine but I can't access any program and it
takes up to 1 mintute for the system to really start up.
Then it sounds like the machine is really processing.....
I've checked startup & msconfig to see if something was
running in the background but I can't figure this out.

virus or incompatible software/drivers or spyware

update and run full virus scan
remove all incompatible software programs
download and run spybot security.kolla.de
make sure all drivers are latest xp versions

I had a problem with a Win98 to WinXP upgrade caused by the anti virus
program. It is very important to uninstall anti virus before upgrade. I
sugest uninstall present AV program and re-boot. Start/Run msconfig and
check Services and Startup to see if any traces of AV program are still
present and uncheck. Also look for unneeded/unwanted startup items. Then you
can re-install AV program.

Have you ever defragnmented hard drive?

I ran virus scan -- all is good. How do I know if a
program is incompatible and if all drivers are up-to-date?
