The cd writer installed in my computer used a ver of Adaptec not supported by
xp. Do I have to replace the cd writer or can I purchase or download
software to remedy this. If I insert a cd-r in the tray that already has
been written to I can read or write to this disc. If I insert a clean cd-r
disc in the tray, it is not recognized. When I go to My Computer it does
no show the drive as a rw drive.

When you upgraded from '98 to XP you'll also need to upgrade the drivers
for all your peripherals connected to your PC to be compatible with XP, such
as your printer, CD-Rom/DVD drive, scanner, camera, etc. Updated drivers
can be downloaded from the manufacturers website and they are free.

Hi Patrick,

You should simply be able to purchase and install a compatible version of a
CD writing program. Unless the drive is really old, you should not have to
update the firmware.

XP supports basic writing. See if that is enough for you. If not then you
can buy the software but I'd just buy a drive with the software included-
have you checked prices recently? You'll get a newer, probably faster drive
that is more compatible with the newer dye types And the price my be less
for a drive with software than buying retail software alone.
