Upgraded from 2000; 2000 still around

Mike O'Donnell

I recently upgraded from 2000 to XP Home. I thought that
XP would uninstall previous versions of Windows.
Instead, it installed on my D drive with 2000 left on the
C and on bootup, I have a choice of which OS to use.
This is convenient except for the fact that I have
limited space on my hard drive and really need the room.
Plus, I had to reinstall all of my software and there are
now two copies of everything! You can imagine that my
hard drive is filling up very fast. Therefore, I will
ask -- can I uninstall Windows 2000 without goofing up XP
Home and if so, how do I go about it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Well, you didn't upgrade at all! Since one cannot upgrade
Windows 2000 to Windows XP Home (you need XP Pro),
apparently you selected "New Installation" and managed to
install XP Home on the same partition as Windows 2000.

This is very undesirable since stability issues will arise when
two different operating systems reside on the same partition.
The only way to correct this is to perform a "clean install".

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.
After XP is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows XP.
