Upgrade

I've recently upgraded my OS from Windows ME to Windows
2000.
I chose the option for a fresh install to overwrite the
previous OS and programs completely. Now when the machine
boots up there apperrs to be a boot manager operating
giving me the option of three operating systems to select
from - two Windows 2000 Professional and a Windows (which
i presume refers to the old Windows ME). I did the
upgrade routine twice thinking i may have done something
wrong the first time round.

When i select any operating system other that the one at
the top of the list at bootup, the system just halts as
there is no OS there. I presume there is a file somewhere
that is being checked at bootup which is indicating the
other 'ghost' operating systems that aren't really there.
How do i fix this??
Any help appreciated.

Your method is sound however, when you get to the point
requesting where to install windows. Delete all
partitions and then create a new one and install windows
on the new partition. This will resolve the issue.

Hope it helps

Thanks for your reply Patrick.

I'm quite certaibn that the second time around i tried
doing just that, but there was a particular pertition
that it would not let me delete - i presume this was the
one with the existing OS on it.

I'll give your method a go anyway and see how i get on.

Thanks again friend.

if the computer works fine - everything installed OK - and your only problem
is the "appearance" as if there are some other os on the computer then there
is no need to reinstall.
open c:\boot.ini with notepad and leave only one line after [operating
systems]. in your case you say the first of the list at boot is the correct
one then leave the first line:

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
