bought used comp with Win98 installed, but no original 98
CD. I would like to upgrade to XP, but want to get full
copy in case I need to reload at some point. Can I use a
full copy of XP to do an upgrade?

Yes.
A full copy of retail Windows XP can do both a Clean Installation and
an upgrade.
A Windows XP upgrade CD can also do both.

.
I would recommend that you back up all data and do a full
install instead of an upgrade. I have heard system will be
more stable after a reformat full install.
