You may not find this much help, but I had the exact same
problem when I upgraded my HP pavilion mx90 to XP last
year. I paid $20 for customer service with HP, but it
was totally worthless. They told me to uninstall and
reinstall everything, which caused untold data problems
and several weeks to fix. I cannot remember exactly what
I did to correct it, but only that there were VERY
SPECIFIC INSTALLATION instructions (do not skip one
single step); I believe the patch and instructions were
on the Microsoft download page. I will also warn you
that I just did an auto Windows Update two days ago and
now my CD drive does not recognize data discs but will
play audio disc just fine. One more aggravation!
