Upgrade to Vista - User Data Question?

J

Jake

XP stores user data in c:\Documents & Settings\me and uses the nomenclature
"My" Documents, "My" This, and "My" that.. Vista has a more sensible
structure - storing user data in c:\Users and Music in "Music" etc.. No
more "My" this and that. I'm glad to get away from that silly marketing-
inspired product development so I want to upgrade to Vista.

Question: If I upgrade a working installation of XP pro to Vista Ult (both
are full retail versions), what happens to these User folders, folder
structure, and my data ?

Do the files in "My Documents" get moved to C:\Users\me\Documents? OR am I
going to be left with the same user data folders that I had with XP ? I
don't want to upgrade if it doesn't move these files to the new folder
structure.

Thanks

Hi,

The data is migrated. You'll find in Vista that there are "My" folders that
are actually junction points that redirect the files to correct new ones.

An upgrade actually moves the entire existing installation to a windows.old
folder. Then Vista is laid down block by block (an image as opposed to being
installed). The final step of an upgrade is to import the user account,
programs, and data into the new installation. Very different from previous
upgrade processes where files were simply overwritten with newer versions
and folder structures were leftover from old to new.
