Upgrade NT4 domain to Win2k using a brand new Win2k PDC

I am just in the process of upgrading my PDC & BDC's to
Win2k. What I would like to do is bring a brand new build
of Win2k on line as the PDC and then upgrade (re-install a
fresh copy of W2k) all my BDC's to W2k.
Can I do this reasonably easily? I know I can build the
new machine as NT BDC and then upgrade it & promote it but
I am then left with a maximum partition size to build NT
on of 2GB so would rather avoid this option?

You should look into migrating to Win 2k instead of upgrading.
See:
How to Set Up ADMT for Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 Migration

Thanks for the info, but do you know if I can keep the
same domain name by doing it this way?

ADMT requires a trust to be setup between the two domains. You can not
establish a trust between 2 domains with the same name.
You should rename the NT 4.0 domain before you start the migration. Win 2k
is a total bear to rename the domain.

Pam,

In addition to what Danny is suggesting ( a very good way! ) if you want to
simply upgrade from WINNT 4.0 to WIN2000 then you might want to consider
simply upgrading the WINNT 4.0 Primary Domain Controller to WIN2000. This
will 'upgrade' your domain to a WIN2000 AD in Mixed Mode environment. You
could also introduce the new hardware as an additional domain controller in
an existing domain. Make sure to transfer the five FSMO roles to the new
hardware and make that DC a Global Catalog Server as well. Then you could
simply upgrade - if you so choose - the WINNT 4.0 Backup Domain Controllers
at your leisure. I would also make sure that I updated the Options in DHCP
to ensure that the clients are getting the correct TCP/IP scope information.

DNS is really huge in WIN2000 so I would make sure that this was in
order....

Also, if you choose this route make sure that you are aware of the fact that
if you have any WIN2000 Professional clients existing in the domain that
they might authenticate only against the former WINNT 4.0 PDC that was
upgraded to WIN2000. Here is a MSKB Article on this:

Make sure to look at the link at the very bottom of the above article.

There is clearly a lot more to it than this but this is the big picture.
