Is it possible to upgrade a retail version of Windows XP
Home Edition to a Volume licensed edition of Windows XP
professional. On the website Microsoft seems to make
distinctions between the retail and enteprise volume
licensed editions

Volume license is a full version copy normally so yeah,
you could. It wouldn't be an upgrade but it would install
over top.
