Upgrade advisor crashing

I've tried to run XP Upgrade Advisor several times. It keeps crashing about 90% of the way thru, with a blue screen warning of a VSERVER(01) +0004D7D ERROR 0E:0028:DC886A40 (the last few digits have varied but the main result has been the same despite repeated attempts). It fails before creating the upgrade.txt file, rendering the process useless.
I'm considering an XP upgrade because my ME system has recently become fairly unstable, freezing or shutting down without warning (this happened, perhaps coincidentally, after upgrading Norton Internet Security to 2004, but shutting that down does nothing to help).
Anyway, any suggestions on the XP upgrade, or at least on making the advisor work?
THANKS

XP hasn't any vxd's. You are in the wrong group. That said, this error
message is very common and has a workaround, as I posted it for years. As
per upgrading, clean/clear up your issues, first. If not, do a clean
install to XP. Good luck, either way!
