I plan to build a new system (motherboard, case, etc). I am currently
using a system with Win XP home edition. In order not to have to
reinstall all my applications, I want to know if there would be
problems if I cloned my current HDD, put it in the new system as the
C: drive then installed a new Win XP Pro over the old OS. Many of
the apps were downloaded and I have no idea what the names of the
installation files are. Some are freeware, some are shareware and
others are apps that I purchased. Even for those that are on
installation disks, I would rather not have to go through all the
settings for those apps again. I presume that when I fire up the HDD
in the new system, it would recognize the new hardware. Would it
choke because of the changes in the hardware profile? Just what kind
of problems would I encounter?
I presume the new mobo's have the ability to boot from the CD and
allow me to install the new OS before running from the HDD with the
old system. I am also concerned about activation. I don't want to
lose the OS on the old system.
If my solution is not viable, is there another way to get got out of
having to reinstall all the apps?

bs has been included as part of my e-mail address to reduce the
