Updating Windows.

Hello Everybody,

I have windows 98 currently installed on my home p.c. and
was wondering if I am able to just upgrade that to windows
xp?

Also, is it possible to un-install windows 98 or will the
installation of xp do that for me?

It is possible to upgrade, assuming the Upgrade version is purchased - the
Full version cannot perform upgrades. If you're looking to remove Win98
anyway, I would suggest a clean install - boot from the XP CD (you might
have to change your BIOS settings to allow this) and format the partition
when given the option. Once formatted, continue the install of XP. As
always, back up any important files before making the transition to XP, as
formatting the drive will destroy any data on the drive.

If i may say that from my own experience, You can't
Upgrade to XP from any Previous Versions.
As for Un-installing win98, when you install XP it will
Format your drive which will erase everything including
98.

Yes. But first run the Microsoft Upgrade Advisor at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp

You will have the choice of upgrading over the top of 98 or
reformatting the drive (wiping out everything there) and
installing cleanly.

No, this is *not* correct. Both the Full and Upgrade versions can
do either a clean installation or an upgrade. However the OEM
version can not do an upgrade, only a clean installation.

No, that's completely false. Why do you think they sell an
Upgrade version if you can't do an upgrade?

You can upgrade to Windows XP Home or Professional from Windows
98, 98SE, or Me. You can also upgrade to Windows XP Professional
from NT4 or 2000.

And you can do a clean installation of Windows XP using the
Upgrade CD by supplying it with a Windows 95 CD.

If you've been unable to do upgrade installations of Windows XP,
it's probably because you tried to do so with an OEM version. OEM
versions do clean installations only, and not upgrades. However
retail versions (both Full and Upgrade) can do either a clean
installation or an upgrade.

Provided the hardware is adequate - say a 400MHz CPU, 256 MB RAM, 5GB
free disk space, and with some initial precautions to remove utility
suites and CD burning software, you just run the Upgrade CD from the
Win98, enter Install, continue with Upgrade.

That will in effect replace the entire system, while retaining other
installed programs and data (but always have critical data backed up,
just in case). You can in the process select to retain a backup of the
Win98 files so you could uninstall XP - I would do so and later when you
have decided you do not want to go back, you can use Add/Remove
programs, Uninstall windows to take the option to delete the backup.
