Updating Windows via http

Hi,

This is a strange problem that I am experiencing. I am
using IE 6 SP1 on a Windows XP Pro. The PC is networked
and on a domain with a proxy server.
When I click on the Windows Update from the browser menu
bar under TOOLS it says that only Administrators can
perform the update (which I am) The proxy and firewall
are not blocking this. The link is:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Now if I was to put an "s" so that it reads
https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

I can perform the updates. Does any one know why this is
doing it?

Thanks,

Tony

I think the 's' you added means it's a secure web site.
But, I just checked mine and there is no 's's and it works. So ?? who
knows?

One explanation is that if you are connected to a caching proxy
then you would be getting the cached version of the non-secure pages.

The WU process eventually needs to switch to a secure connection
anyway to transmit the updates so starting with the secure protocol
is sometimes suggested as a diagnostic in case that protocol is the
cause of a problem symptom. The fact that it also works is a bonus.
