Updating same text in two places

There's no method that will let you update either place and have the other
update. You need to pick one as the 'primary' location -- and you can then
have any number of other locations showing the same text. A bookmark and REF
fields is probably the easiest method for you. A document property and
DocProperty fields is another possibility.

Is there a Word feature that allows for having the same text in two places
in a single document so that when you update the text in one place, Word
automatically (or through some keyboard update feature) updates the same
text in the other place - it's something like a linked cross-reference, but
I think it's more sophisticated.

Nope. I had this feature on a Mac program called More and loved it.

From the FAQ

19. How can I enter something once in a document and have it repeat
elsewhere?

You can make the repeated data hyperlink to the original so you can make the
change there, though.
