Updating Outlook 2002 is impossible for Office 2000 customers

It looks like Microsoft makes it impossible to update Outlook 2002 to the
latest patch/update release. I am running Outlook 2002 on a Windows 2000
platform. Seeing how frequently Microsoft products need to be fixed and
patch and band-aided, I decide to try checking for the latest release of
Outlook 2002. I discovered that there are several patches/update releases
but whenever I attempt to install one I am informed I need to have the
Office XP SP 2 installed first. Well hold on!... I don't have Office XP!
I have Office 2000! So trying to be an obedient slave I then go hunting for
Office XP SP 2. I download it and attempt to install it. But whoops! The
Office XP SP2 requires an updated installation tool. So I go hunting for
that product. When I download it and attempt to install it I am informed
"The expected version of the product was not found on your system."

OK Microsoft....here I am trying to update/patch Outlook 2002, and I am told
that that cannot be done until I perform the impossible. Short of buying an
unnecessary update to Office XP, how do I update Outlook 2002 on my Windows
2000 system?

Thanks.

Is it safe to assume that you tried installing Office XP Service Pack 1
before trying to install Office XP SP2? (SP2 is *not* a cumulative update.)

You will need Windows Installer 2.0, which can be downloaded from

Sue,

I did that, and when I download and attempted the install, I am greeted with
a "The specified service already exists" message.

Also, the updates available for Outlook 2002 are found at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/CD010225501033.aspx

Scroll to the bottom of that page.

I have no use for the "Office XP Service Pack 1 for Multilanguage User
Interface Pack" so I skip it.

Next from the bottom up I tried downloading "Office XP Update: Service Pack
2 (SP2)" When I install this, I get the error message "The expected version
of the product was not found on your system."

If I try to install the "Outlook 2002 Update: December 4, 2002" (next item
up from the bottom)...the following message appears once the install begins
"The expected version of the product was not found on your system."

Like I said earlier, Microsoft makes it impossible to update Outlook 2002 if
the user is running Office 2000.

So, it sounds like WIndows Installer 2.0 is already installed and available.

The December 4, 2002 update is a post-SP2 update and requires that SP2 be installed first.

For SP2, the page at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...53-ab76-4a63-99da-b4ed914c1514&displaylang=en explains that SP1 is a prerequisite for SP2.

BTW, what is your Outlook build number, as listed on the Help | About Microsoft Outlook dialog?

be careful what you ask for...

Took the posted link. Took the link on said page for Office XP Update:
Service Pack 2 (SP2) with a release date of 7/16/2002. Scrolled to the
bottom of the page. Scroll up and look just above "System Requirements" and
you will see this:

Important: Prior to installing Office XP SP2, you must install Office XP
Service Pack 1 (SP1).

For SP2, the page...explains that SP1 is a prerequisite for SP2.

Sue,

I never saw SP1 on page #1. I also never saw the tiny little "2" at the
bottom of the available downloads, so I assumed SP1 wasn't available. I
have since gone back, discovered page 2 of the available downloads,
installed SP1, SP2 and SP3. All 3 have now been successfully installed.
