Updating Make-table query

I am using a make-table query in my WInXP Access 2002 database in another
application (ESRI ArcView GIS). This application can only link to tables int
eh database, and not select queries.

Is there a way of updating the Make-table query when the information in the
database changes?

Not sure I understand! A MakeTable query will use whatever information exists
in the table(s) upon which it is based at the time that the query is executed.

If you mean that you want to run a make table query to create a new table, and
then have that new table automagically change its values whenever some OTHER
table's values change, the answer is no, you cannot.

This is a shame, John.

Thank you for making this clear.

MakeTable queries are VERY rarely needed - this is one reason.

If you can select a subset of the records using a Select query (rather than a
MakeTable query), you can use that select query as the recordsource for a Form
or Report; you can export it; you can edit it; you can basically do anything
with it that you can do with a table. Are you sure that you NEED a make table
query at all?

I have been approaching this conclusion, John. I have worked out that it
would be better to export to excel, then import to ArcView. This now seems
to be working.

I had hoped to be able to by-pass the extra step of importing to Excel, on
the idea that the fewer steps, the less likely for things to go wrong.

I do appreciate your concern on my not going astray. This is my first go at
using a Discussion Group, and your response will encourage me to try it again.

With thanks,
