Updating from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 Pro

I have been having problems with my computer. I was told if I were to upgrade my computer it would fix the problems. So I tried to upgrade to Windows 2000 Pro, but during upgrading it an error2 came up. I have no idea what it is. How do I get the error2 fixed?
 
Back up all your important files, then allow your disk to be formatted
during the installation. You will end up with a far better and robust
installation.

I believe they meant for you to upgrade/replace the COMPUTER. Installing
a different Operating system on a computer does NOT fix bad hardware and
Windows 2000 requires BETTER hardware than Windows 98 to operate properly.
