Updating Exclel imbedded in Word once for both documents

How do you update an excel object imbedded in word so that the change
persists in both objects?
 
There's an option when you embed the object to link to to it--not just embed it.

I'm betting that you didn't check that box.

If you check that box, there's really only one object.

If you didn't check that box, there are two distinct objects and they aren't
tied together.

(am I close?)
