updating BIOS

I have downloaded file on a MS-DOS floppy. The floppy
loads in DOS & gves me a A:\ prompt. When I type the file
name it gives me a Bad command or file name. My file
system is NTFS, could this be the problem & if so how do I
get around it?

The file you collected is probably a *.bin , in any event it's a binary
file. You need to use the correct flasher program for your bios chip.
Usually you type the name of the flasher program with the name of the binary
file as a parameter and usually one or more switches at the A:\ dos prompt.

If you don't have a specific purpose for reflashing your bios, leave it
alone !

Check the contents of the floppy with a DIR command. Perhaps the file
was corrupted during download. You might want to try downloading it
again and make sure to carefully follow the instructions for updating
the BIOS.

No, it has nothing to do with the file system on the hard drive, nor
with Windows XP for that matter. The BIOS is part of the motherboard
hardware.

You need to give more details, like which mobo & what exactly you are
typing.

And what you see before you type anything.

The file name must be in the format 8.3, not a long file name, but that is
likely to be true already.

Generally you have to execute the bios flashing program and THEN enter the
file name into that.

Plus you better be very sure that you have the exact file for your mobo.

Good advice given here by others, but to me it seems you have no idea
exactly what you need to do here - and when messing with BIOS, if you
don't know the exact procedure to use, you are in for a catastrophy if
you proceed.

IF you really need to flash your BIOS ( a BIG IF, don't do it just
because there's a "newer" version out there), I'd suggest you pack up
your system and tote the box to the nearest computer shop for some
assistance.

No. After booting a DOS floppy all the files on it (ie in A are in
FAT 12 and it can get at them. What it would not be able to do is
access the NTFS partition on the hard disk. But if as you say you have
put the program on the floppy that does not arise.. Make sure that the
file name is right - do a DIR

The BIOS upgrade download file needs to be un-zipped before placing the
files onto the floppy diskette. Once the download file un-zipped, the place
BIOS flash utility (should be included with an .EXE extension) and the BIOS
binary image file (usually a .BIN). You may also have a readme file which
tells you how to process the BIOS upgrade.
