I received a notice to download an update called "Realtek AC'97 Audio". Is
this a necessary download? I have my automatic updates to notify me when
updates are available, but I don't know if this is critical. It just says
high priority.

Compare the driver's date from Update to to the one you have now. If it's
newer, I'd go for it. OTOH, if your audio is working well, why fix something
that ain't broke? You might also want to compare dates of these drivers with
Realtek's web site.

If it aint broke don't fix it, is always good advise

Helen;
That sounds like a sound driver.
You should always get drivers directly from the hardware manufacturer and
not through Windows Update.
Since Windows Update recognizes you have an older driver, go to the
manufacturer and get their driver instead.

Don't update drivers from the windows update site. If a driver needs
updating get it from the device manufacturer's web site. And there is
no need to update a driver unless you are having a problem and the new
driver is designed to fix that problem or it has some new feature you
must have.

Thanks for the advise. I'm going to leave it alone. This computer is brand
new, I've only had it for a month and it's working terrific. How do I stop
getting update notices for this?

You're welcome. On the windows update site in the left pane use the
appropriate option to hide driver updates.
