Getting errors like that during installation indicate hardware issues.
The installation you now have is not complete and should be redone
*after* you've determined what the hardware problems were and corrected
them.

Reasons for those errors (try one thing at a time, testing after each
change):

1. The XP install cd itself - scratched, dirty, bad burn if a copy. Look
at it carefully, test on another pc, use another disk.

2. The cd/dvd drive is faulty. Try a different drive.

3. The hard drive is faulty. Download a diagnostic utility from the hard
drive mftr.'s website (or use SeaTools). You will create a bootable cd
with the file you download. You need third-party burning software to
create the bootable cd. Boot the target computer with the media you
created and do a thorough test of the hard drive. If it fails any
physical tests, replace it.

4. Faulty RAM (memory). Test with a memory diagnostic. I prefer
Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org. Create a bootable cd, boot with it,
allow the test to run for an extended period of time unless you get
immediate errors. If you get errors, replace the faulty RAM.

Standard caveat: Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out
suspected parts with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing
yourself and/or are uncomfortable opening your computer, take the
machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local
equivalent of BigStoreUSA).
