Updates were unable to be successfully installed

The error message indicated in the subject line began yesterday while
attempting to install the latest updates to XP. Investigation of the
error indicates an error of 0x80246008 and when tracked down using the
System Event Log viewer the problem comes down to a failure of the
BITService to start. Following the suggestions on how to diagnose the
entries for the CLSID referred to in the registry I find that the
CLSID does NOT have an entry for inprocserver32. In otherwords the
CLSID simply stands alone! Thus I conclude that the service cannot
start because there is no start (entry) point. Since I've changed
nothing (that I'm aware of) I have no idea what has led to this
corruption. I have registered both of the dlls suggested by MS but
that doesn't fix anything. Any suggestions on how to proceed would be
much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

0x80246008 => Failed to create the IBackgroundCopyManager interface to BITS
=> The BITS service may have been disabled

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > Double-click on Background
Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) > General > Click on START button and
revisit Windows Update.

If Automatic Updates is enabled, choose Manual or Automatic option in
'Startup type' on that same tab.

I did all of that and the suggested solutions didn't help. Using
System Event viewer I learned that "The server
{4991D34B-80A1-4291-83B6-3328366B9097} did not register with DCOM
within the required timeout." This refers to BITS. In my original
message I stated that when looking at the CLSID above (using regedit)
it simply "stands alone." There are no pointers to other
programs/dlls, etc. So, I'm left really hanging out here.

The link you provided under 'If still no joy, see" paid off. The
solution involved the following:

"In the end, I'm not sure which of the two procedures did it, but here
they are. In an attempt to fix search, I did the following:


regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll "

BITS now runs normally and autoupdates once again functions. I have
no idea which of the four listed above corrected the problem but it is
now gone. Perhaps a more knowledable individual can provide us with
the correct answer.

I use Agent and simply reply ... for what ever reason Agent isn't

It won't do if people are using Outlook Express and putting quoted
previous messages below their sig separator. Agent is behaving as it
should and cutting them off.
