Good evening!

I want to buy a copy of the ORIGINAL WinXP Professional, since I need
another copy of the retail edition and I've found the original version
(before any service packs) very cheap.

What updates will it accept through MS updates? Will I be able to
slipstream the i386 folder, to have a tolerably up-to-date version of WinXP?

Thanks.
C.

How cheap? Beware OEM versions.

You will have to installed WinXP SP2 (you can skip SP1) before you'll be
able to install SP2 or any other updates.

If it's a full retail version of WinXP Gold, you'll be able to slipstream
SP2.

google 'slipstream' there are a quite a few options.
N-lite is a good program that I've used.
And yes, you can take an old CD and upgrade it to SP3 and then remake
the CD so the system install installs SP3 right off the bat.

The XP Gold, or original version I think needs SP1 then SP3
slipstreamed. But if you have SP2 or SP1 you can jump straight to SP3.
Nlite also allows you to add things like IE7 and WMP11 updates to the
CD. Not sure you want to, but yes, it allows you do it....

No, it's a full retail version, selling for about $160. That's not free,
but it's still a lot better than the normal price for a retail copy.

You mean that I will be able to update to SP2 through MS Updates?

Nope, just WinXP Professional Retail.

Thanks again.

WinXP SP2 must be installed in order to use Windows Update now and to be
offered any updates. You'll have to install SP2 manually.

WinXP Gold = WinXP w/no SPs

Whenever people mention WinXP Gold, they tend to be talking about the
original release of XP, without any service pack (SP) installed.

You must have SP1a or SP2 before going to SP3. In other words if you only
have Windows XP with no service packs or SP1, you must first go to SP1a or
SP2 before you can go toSP3.
And you can Google for "Autostreamer" that is a great slipstream program
that does it all.

The pre-requisite for a specific minimum SP is only for Windows XP already
installed. Then doing a subsequent SP update within the XP environment.
With SP3, the pre-req is SP1A for example in that case.

There is no pre-requisite for any XP with any SP installation CD when
slipstreaming any subsequent SP, in order to make an XP installation CD.
True for retail, and generic OEM installation XP CD as source CD.

Let me see if I understand you correctly. I think that you're saying that I
can proceed as follows:

1. I have WinXP Gold installed on my machine.
2. I copy what I need for the slipstreaming to some folder, let's XPSource.
3. I download SP1a from someplace that still has it, let's say
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,22715-page,1-c,systemresourcestuneup/description.html , install SP1a, and copy the appropriate files to XPSource.
4. I repeat the procedure in 3 using let's say,
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fi...ge,1-c,systemresourcestuneup/description.html
, which will now install since I'm running 1a. I copy the appropriate files
to XPSource.
5. I am now running SP2, and can use the updated files in XPSource to
create the new Windows install disk.

Is that it?

Thanks.
C.
