updates download folder

hi all,
In windows update, my settings are , i download the updates and install
later.
I want to know when the same is installed, does windows deletes the updates
or does it store the same.
In that case, which is the folder where windows stores them.
In my case i searched and could locate this folder where i found some
resembling the various KBXXXXXX articles.

E:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

I also want to know should one take a backup of the downloads so as to not
to download the same in case a system crash happens and one has to resort
back to updating windows.

pls let know

The softwaredistribution\download folder is cleared in about 10 days
automatically.

If you want to keep updates for future use, you need to manually download
the same.

You can download them from the Catalog and save to be installed later.

Click Add button for each update you want to download. Once you have what
you want, Click the "Go To Download Basket" link. Type in or browse to the
location where you want the updates saved to and then Click the "Download
Now" button.
Once downloaded, you can then burn them to CD.

(NB: xxxxxx is the 6 numerical digits of the KB.

For security and other patches released for a given month :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx
Replace ## with the two-digit year
Replace *** with the three character month abbreviation

Providing there are releases for that month, you will see the list of
"critical" "important" patches for that month
Check on the 2nd Tuesday of each month - later in the day.
