Updates behind firewall

While trying to update WinXp Pro the update screen hangs
on:

'Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update
software...

Depending on your connection speed, this might take a
minute. During this time, you may receive one or more
security warnings. Review each security warning to ensure
that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click
Yes to install the software.'

Never gets past that... I thinks it's because I'm behind
a firewall. (Websites that check for browser versions
display pages incorrectly because thay can't check my
browser version.) Or, it could be some setting in the
registry... In any case, is there a wemsite I can
download the updates from manually and install them - or
is there a registry fix?

Yoou should check into why your firewall isn't allowing the updates. What
firewall are you using?

well, i use Xp's firewall for my computer, but our
network is behins a firewall, i don't know how it's
configured - my guess is that the ports used by windows
update are blocked - like i said, browser checking sites
can't see my version, also, MSN messenger - no voice,
etc.

Before the network admin blocked updates - but i was able
to edit the registry - already checked the registry, so i
guess its the firewall...
