Okay, got windows update to notify me when new updates are available. They
have been downloaded. KB939653, KB941202, KB933729, KB890830. Where are
they to copy to removable media?

If you want to install those/save them for future installs, you will have to

Why not download them to disc from the download center then install from the
disc.

Windows\Software Distribution subfolder. 4 different subfolders within it.
In 3 of the 4 subfolders is a further subfolder called update. Under each
update subfolder are a few files. In each one is a file stating the
KBnumber followed by the the "cat" extension. As well as update.exe, some
inf files, eula.txt, and so forth. What are those for?
The 4th subfolder under the Software Distribution folder is called S-1-5-18.
This subfolder contains 2 subfolders. Both are empty.

Will these said subfolders under the Software Distribution subfolder
continue to exist IF I allow windows to install the updates?

Yes - in most cases.

The automatic updates version of the update is downloaded/installed from
there.

Without stopping the automatic update service - you may have trouble
deleting these folders/files in some cases...

Although you probably *could* get the updates from within these folders (in
some cases) to copy/install stand-alone - many you cannot and the effect of
those who you could would be unknown.

It's not like it is difficult to get all the updates yourself and put them
on a CD/external media...
Time consuming - yeah. Actually - maybe...
Difficult - nah.

*do not* go back as far as you might need.

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

You could use the subfolders in WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
to install the updates on another system or reinstall them to the
current system if you wanted to.
In fact, you can rename the subfolders to the KB number of the update by
referring to the .cat files that show the KB number <w>
Then run update.exe in the renamed subfolders to install the updates.
