updater not working--incorrectly reports that I'm NOT connected to the internet!

When I run autoupdater, I'm told "Warning, could not
connect to the internet. Updates have failed."
BUT that's not true, I AM CONNECTED to the internet!
I see others reporting this problem here...BUT no answers!
Also, why doesn't this software have a fix or repair
function???
Do we just remove it and re-install it???
Microsoft, I'm disappointed that you made a tool without
fix or repair function!
Obviously, the person writing the HELP stuff needs some
help too!
Aaah, TROUBLESHOOTING available???

Im going to repeat one answer, the answer is over all the
forums:

The fix is extremely simple with XP SP2. If you aren't at
that level, you might consider using a third-party utility-
-see the second link below:

Update install:

control panel, add or remove programs, Microsoft
Antispyware, change, update.
