Updated Intel 82810E graphics controller: REPOST

After updating my Intel 82810E graphics controller
driver, display settings/advanced no longer allows
me to change the color mgt. ('gamma, brightness,
etc.') settings (the options are no longer appear in
advanced mode);
- Windows Me upgraded to XP
- Intel 82810E Graphics Controller ver. 4.12.01.2576
updated to ver. 6.3.0.1007 (MS Corp. - XP version).

When I try to 'roll back' or manually change the
driver back to the original (Me) version, Windows
warns me that XP is not a supported OS and will not
allow it. I obtained & used the newest driver DL from
the Intel site which is when I got 'stuck' with the XP
version update.

When I boot in Me (I have XP on D:/ and Me on C:/)
I can still change the settings with the older driver
loaded, but not so in XP with the newer driver.
I am perplexed as to why such a 'standard'
functionality would be missing from an update.??
Any thoughts will be appreciated - I have my monitor
brightness/ contrast settings maxed-out and it is still
too dim. - Ron

You may have "Phantom" instances of both your Video card &
monitors existing in Device Manager. To view these you'll need
to add a System Environment variable:
DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices
and set it's value to 1.
Open Device Manager, Click View & tic/check "Show Hidden
Devices". Expand the Display adapters category and see if more
than a single device is shown. Any in diminished tone or grayed out
are phantoms and should be uninstalled. Whichever active adapter
is left you'll want to do an update driver, using the latest Intel for it.
Afterwards, redefine your monitor from "Plug-&-Play" to a more
exacting Vendor/Model type.

You might also want to consider running/updating the Intel Chipset
driver package for your PC. It provides some important drivers for
the AGP subsystem.

Thanks for your reply R. McCarty,
In the meantime I resolved the issue via researching more
on the Intel site and going with my instincts that the newest
driver may not be the best one.
The 'fix' was changing the display driver from the most current
one to the 'next oldest' one, ver. 6.131.3044. After rebooting,
the familiar "Intel Graphics Technology" icon greeted me.
Go figure, the newest driver gave me the headache.
My SyncMaster Monitor driver was already up to date, as well
as any 82810E chipset update I could find on the Intel site.
I didn't know there were 'hidden devices' though, and when I
changed to view them I was surprised. There was nothing
unusual in the display or monitor categories, but I did find a
mouse I'm not using, so thanks for that useful info.
You mentioned adding a system variable but I'm not sure
where to do that.
Thanks again for your help.

R.McCarty,
I figured out to change the Environment Variable as you suggested.
Now my question is; what do I do with all those "greyed-out"
entries? Some devices appear 2X or 3X in the same category,
all but one greyed-out..
Some devices I don't have anymore, but some I'm not so sure
about (they might be associated with Windows Me on my
other drive?).
Can I safely uninstall the 'phantoms'? What would be your
advice?
Thanks again.

Phantoms are generally safe to remove Except in a couple of
categories - Sound & System Devices. Just something that I
omitted in the original post, not all grayed out devices are truly
Phantoms. If you have devices/peripherals that are powered
off they appear the same as a true phantom. So when going
through the listing make sure that you don't inadvertently get
rid of things that you'll want in your device table, like scanners
or portable media players that might not currently be plugged
in or powered on.

I understand.
Now, what would you do with my 2 hard-drives that are listed
twice? Are the 'dupes' from Windows Me that isn't currently in
use? Hmmmm.. I will proceed with caution.
Thanks again.
