Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Microsoft Windows that helps you
get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use
Windows Update. If you are looking for updates to Microsoft products for
Macintosh operating systems, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/mac/.

Why this message when I try to access WIN Update. I am running WIN XP SP2

Only use Internet Explorer when visiting the Windows Update web site.

I had a similar situation just last week - couldn't get WindowsUpdate to
work. What I discovered is that somehow the Internet Explorer install got IE5
and IE6 components mixed up. When queried, it returned IE6SP1. If I tried to
reinstall, it refused on the grounds that all the latest components were
already installed. Can't remember how I caused the IE5 message, but it was
clearly a corrupt install.

Whether or not this is your exact problem, a reinstall of IE could fix you.

To fix it, I had to uninstall IE, reboot, and then reinstall IE from an
external source (CDROM). If you choose to reinstall from Add/Remove Programs
without an external source, the old, bad components are reactivated. If you
don't have any external source of Internet Explorer, you need to get one.
Even if you uninstall IE6 and reinstall IE5, WindowsUpdate should start
working again. IE5 and IE5.5 can be found as add-ons with many Microsoft and
3rd-party CD's. You might have a copy laying around. I think AOL CD's also
have it on CD (and they hand those out everywhere like candy!). Then you can
update to IE6SP1.

I am only using Windows Firewall.

Checking registry Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\User Agent\Post Platform, I find two listed. Should there be two?.
If not can anybody advise which one is not needed. If it's a corruption,
don't know how it happened since OS has been flawless since updating to SP2.
Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.
