Every day I keep getting the same update and it appears to be stuck in some
mode of not knowing the update is installed. The message I get tells me
that it's for a Critical Update for Windows Media Player Script Commands
(KB828026).

Any clues?

Tom

Doug,

I deleted the update and then tried to manually update. Twice, then a
reboot, then again. This is
what I got in return.

Also, looking at the Update History, it gets even more confusing.

Any more suggestions?

Tom

P.S. I just read about Koldbear and am saddened by it. He helped many many
people.

Remove this update from Add/Remove Programs, then reinstall it.

Doug,

I downloaded the file and when I tried to extract the files, it seemed to
extract a bunch of files and then I got an error message "EXTRACTION FAILED"
and a message saying "Access Denied." By the way, the Update was not in my
Add/Remove items.

We must be zeroing in on the problem so keep trying with me.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom,

Remove the update again, and download the patch manually from:

SUCCESS! I finally booted up in Safe mode, logged in as administrator, and
everything went fine. Go figger.

What a pain in the ass though. How are non-techies and people like my
Grandparents supposed to use a computer when it's this difficult?
