Back on 9/4, I posted a problem that had been occuring since installing SP2.
Internet explorer would work for awhile then would lock up.
You could close it but you could not reopen it. When you attempted to reopen
it, nothing would happen BUT,it would appear in task managers process area.
I also discovered that outlook express would also not open at this point and
upon further investigation and trial and error found that anything that
required access to the internet including Dr.Watson, which was trying to
create an error report, would hang.
I disabled the new windows firewall because I have Panda's Platinum 7
antivirus and firewall installed but the problems persisted.
Yesterday when my computer locked up again, I decided to turn off both the
antivirus and firewall,(Panda's). Immediately, things cleared up. I was able
to open any internet requiring apps.
I'm not sure if this is an antivirus or firewall issue.
I turned Panda's firewall off and it's antivirus on and also turned on the
new windows firewall. So far for two days there have been no apparent
problems.
My questions are:
1) Why did panda's firewall work at the onset of an internet explorer
session and then lock up ? I checked all of the permissions in the
firewall and everything had the proper "always allow" permission.
2) I assume that this third party firewall was not interfering with the new
xp firewall as it was disabled . or could I be wrong ?
3) I would like a more robust firewall that monitors incoming/outgoing and
has an easily intelligible log. Any recomendations ? ( I have in the past
used and liked ZA free version with Visual zone as it's logging counterpart
but removed it when I got the Panda suite).
4) If it is determined that this is an antivirus problem and not the
firewall, What antivirus programs provide the best protection with the least
amount of headaches in relation to XP/SP2 ? ( I also have Nortons 2004
antivirus but once again removed it when I got the Panda suite).
I have checked Panda's site for updates and knowledge base issues for this
problem but have found none nor have I been able to find anything at
microsoft or google concerning this issue.
Hopefully, others may benefit from this lengthly post for which I appoligize.
