April showers bring May flowers - Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 finally arrived!

It takes us a long time to get satisfied, but we've finally reached the point where we are ready to release version 1.4 of our anti-spyware solution Spybot - Search & Destroy. Here are some of the new features it offers:

First native multi-installation scanner
On PE boot CDs as well as on any system with multiple installations of Windows 2000 or later, Spybot-S&D 1.4 is able to scan the other installations as well, including the registry. From what we know, Spybot-S&D is the first anti-spyware solution that offers inactive registry scanning as a native feature.

Speed boost-ups
Spybot-S&D 1.4 should work noticably faster than 1.3 during scans. And if you still don't like to wait, you can play our easter egg while scanning.

Improved tools
We've improved the Tools section that Spybot-S&D offers in advanced mode - the process list now offers a list of open network connection per application (Windows 2000 or newer only), helping you to quickly identify which applications are local and which do use connections to the outside. Our detection mechanisms have also been updated, from detecting and cleaning services over protocol filters to the afore-mentioned scanning in inactive installations registries.

Graphics remake, and more
We've replaced the old home made icons with a bunch of great graphics provided by the guys at Yellow Icon Studio to make the user interface look smoother. But while this is highly visible on the surface, there have been more than 104 important changes underneath.

Download
We're notifying mirrors currently to make the newest version available. Please look here to find a place where you can download 1.4.

We hope you enjoy 1.4 even more than our previous releases!

I recently downloaded an apps that was listed in alt.comp.freeware
digest(?)
and got burned by spy nuggets called "ezula-something" and
"elite-something". They spy program that was hard to kill. Each time I
stopped the processes using the task manager and startup (msconfig) but
they keep coming back. These spy programs would launch IE and place
aliases on the desktop for porn websites and other ads.

Spybot 1.3 with latest detection files found these and purportedly
removed them, but it never went away altogether. Now it no longer
creates these aliases or launch IE, but the apps would still launch
itself once in a while I have Task Manager running on top) and
sometimes I also see Tvs-something running (another spyware).

I will download 1.4 and see if it solved my problem. Does it detect
BHOs, and autorun stuff? BTW, I also use MS Spyware Beta.

Thanks for doing the good work.

Wow! 1.4 scans really, really fast compared to 1.3!

Hmm. Almost *too* fast. On my system, it was darned near instantaneous.
1.3 used to take several minutes. However, this new version did catch
Backweb (installed by my Kodak digital camera, and claimed to not be
spyware by the company.)

My scan took 4.5 minutes John. Are you sure that that you got the new
detection files? There are 24,098 malwares checked for now with the
beta detection files.

AntiVir is raising cane over teatimer and a few other files. I set
these in the exclude list and I'm still getting popups from AV...

Well, I had *thought* that I did when I installed it. However, I just
checked again for updates because of your reply and low and behold,
there were new detection rules. It's scanning as I write this, and it's
not going so fast now.

In this group, I've heard about too many problems related to the use of
Teatimer so I've never bothered with it.

Teatimer is one of the best parts of the program John. No trouble here with
it!!
