Update problems

On Sat Jul 31 I downloaded the update:

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
(KB867801).

It had come from my Automatic Updates icon on the Systems Tray.

I now have serious problems all over. Surfing the Net is near impossible.
Most Links and pages I click are not responding as per Task Manager. OE
doesn't
seem affected.

Tried some diagnostics. Defrag took two hours instead of the usual once a
week 5 mins. My computer speed is 2.6G. Its brand new about 2 months old
came with WinXP preinstalled. There's a severe slowdown in speed. Disk
Cleanup could startup and progress no more. I left it going for 6 hours and
still no progress. Task Manager indicates as running.

I tried Doug Knox's method "Clean Temp Folder" of 8/1 to clear up the Disk
Cleanup problem. Now Disk Cleanup doesn't show up after clicking it in
Programs/Accesories/Systems Tools. I hope Doug can also offer further help
here.

I really need help here.

This KB was Issued: July 30, 2004 . I give them 14-30
days to get the kinks out. & I wont install V5 of
Update 4 30 days either.

If chances of MS producing 1 correct patch is .9, then
the chance that they'll get all 4 correct at once is at
most (.9)**4 =~.6 since it ignores failures due to
interactions of the 4. If u do them 1 at a time, then
it is ~.6 BUT you can choose not to install 1's that r
NOT applicable (patches for servers, net bios, shutdown
services, etc). I think I install about 60% criticals &
20% others.
