[Update] Media Player Classic

Wait a second ... I've been using version 6.4.8.2 which is 1.2 MB.
But this new one is 4.5 MB! What's the deal?

Don't know, only to add, the translated versions of v6.4.8.3 also seem
to be much smaller in size.

Just downloaded version 6.4.8.3 and it was 1.9 mb.

Could you post the link you used? I DL'd earlier and resulting file
also 4.5 Mb (4.51 Mb actually).

Don't worry about it, Mike. I think you are referring to the unexpanded
..zip file. We were (or at least I was) referring to the expanded file.

MPC v6.4.8.2 file size = 1.27 Mb
MPC v6.4.8.3 file size = 4.51 Mb

Quite some hike in file size. But a *lot* of changes have been made to
the prog as indicated on the project's release page. Maybe MPC is
heading for bloatware staus ;-)

I e-mailed Gabest, the project author, about this. Maybe he can shed some
light on why the file size suddenly almost quadrupled for an incremental
update.

Got quick replies! He said that MPC is no longer compressed with UPX.
"Yes," he added, "there was this little auto-unpacker placed before the real
exe, like a self-decompressing archive." I guess it might be a loading-speed
issue? Whatever the case, this explains the sharp increase in size.

I've compared new and ol version and it seems that Gabest is no longer
compressing MPC with UPX. No need to panic ;)

Why update it anyway? Most people merely use it as a player for Real
Alternative and Quicktime Alternative. As long as there's Winamp, there's
no need for any other media player.

I wonder why he quit. I'd be nice to have both versions available,
uncompressed for people who want to reduce processor overhead[1], and
compressed for people who want to save HDD space.

I don't actually know how much CPU usage is involved in decompressing a
upx'd exe into main memory, but it must be some.

Media Player Classic 6.4.8.3 gets shrunk!!

Just installed the latest
Real Alternative and QuickTime Alternative
Homepage: http://www.codecguide.com/

Both have
- Updated Media Player Classic to version 6.4.8.3

The Alternative installer re-compresses the MPC to 1.7 Mb!

Hmm. I just might try out this smaller version, yes. Thanks for the note,
Mike.
