Update Breaks Access To Control Panel ?

M

MrBill

Hi,
I just installed an update downloaded last Friday. Now, I can't access my
control panel. I try to access it through the START --> Settings -->
Control Panel and the next menu appears (showing the different control panel
apps) and then Poof! Everything on the screen is gone. All I have is the
desktop without the task bar, without icons, with nothing. Doing a
Ctl-Alt-Del brings up task manager from which I can reboot.

Has anybody seen anything like this? Any ideas on the cause?

Thanks Bill

Hi Mr Bill

After logging on press control and escape. Then the start Menu will open.
There choose "run..." and there type 'regedit' (without the '). The registry
editor will open. There head to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon. In
the right pane check if the shell key is set to Explorer.exe. If not, set it
to Explorer.exe.

Then verify if you can start Explorer from the command line: Open again the
'run..' window and there enter "cmd". A new window will open. There type
exporer.exe. If Explorer will open your explorer is fine and the above fix
should fix everything. If this does not resolve the issue, then head to this
