I have just had a marathon session unzipping a file I downloaded off the net.
It took 17 hours to unzip a 5.6Gb file using the unzip program in Vista
Ultimate. Should it take that long? Should I be looking for something
better than the Vista Unzip utility?

I have heard that before, apparently it's a problem.
There are free unzip utilities available, try Google, it is your friend.

I do trust WinZip.exe. It is a proven value. Has been around for years, went
thru many generations of upgrade. It is not free though.

BTW it occurred to me why it took so long for Vista to unzip the file. It
was checking this large zip file for malware.

As AlexB mentioned, anti-virus programs can cause extended unzipping times.
Also, there are some optimizations and enhancements in SP1 that will help.
7zip is definitely recommended to enhance Vista's capabilities.

Thanks I have just downloaded the 7zip file I will try it out later. The
file I downloaded is a free download of the student version of AutoCad
Inventor from Autodesk themselves. Free if you are a student.
