In the past when I switched the power on my computer it proceeded to load
WITHOUT interruptions until it produced the Desktop with all the Icons and
connections to Broadband etc.
Few weeks ago (after an automatic download by Microsoft)
instead proceeding to Desktop I get a Welcome on one half of the screen and
on the other half is a little square with palms and my name besides it.
Until I click on that square and get "Loading your personal Settings" the PC
will not proceed to Desktop.
How do I eliminate this inconvenience and return the computer to the
original starting procedure?

Click Start / Run / control userpasswords2 {OK}.
Now untick the box that requires users to enter a password.

Right-click "My Computer", Manage, expand "Local Users and Groups", click "Users" and disable
everyone except you, and the Administrator account by double-clicking the account and checking
the disable box.

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried it,(on removing the tick I had to
complete a request to produce a Password, otherwise the tick would reappear)
turned off the PC, turned it on again but I still get the Welcome screen as
before. What else can you suggest?

Thank you for the suggestion. You must have a different version of
Win.XPPro, because I do not get the same responses from the suggested
procedure as you do, and so I could not carry them out.

You probable have XP Home...

Reboot, and right after the BIOS beep, press and hold F8. Select Safe Mode.
At the logon screen, select Administrator, and click OK. (No password)
Now use the steps I outlined above.

You previously clicked your logon icon without
entering a password, hence your password must
be blank.

Ho stupid do you think I am, suggesting that I do not know what OS I have.
In any case even in the safe mode My Computer only shows what I have such as
DVD, Re-Write, Hard Disk ect, nothing like you suggest. Maybe you have the
Home Version?

Unk was not suggesting that you do not know your own OS - he
merely guessed that you may have WinXP Home (because you
failed to state it in your post). You might find that a large percentage
of WinXP Home users would NOT know what OS they have, if in
fact they know what an OS is. It was entirely appropriate for Unk to
make this statement.

At last it works, but for your information it only does, because I changed
the User Name from Admistrator to my own on the Window "Automatically Log
On". Maybe you would also comment on:-
1.Who changed from my name to Administrator in that Window?
2.If Unk was quoting from Win.XPPro why do I not get the same responses from
the actions he suggested. My version of Win.XPPro is automatically updated
but it is in anyway only less than four yo?
Finally many thanks for your help!

*** You're the best person to answer this question - it's your PC.

*** Sorry, I do not understand your question.
Finally many thanks for your help!
*** You're welcome.
